We have been working on opinion writing over the past few weeks. We started off by discussing opinion versus fact.
We read Duck! Rabbit! and formed our own opinions on whether we thought the animal was a duck or rabbit. We gave reasons to support our opinion. After we gathered on the carpet to share, we noticed that some reasons were more convincing than others.
Next, we read The Perfect Pet and chose what we believed would be our perfect pet. Our goal was to be as persuasive as possible by providing strong reasons and examples. For instance, T. mentioned that a cute, cuddly cat would keep him company at night and make him feel safe. Some students, who felt confident were invited to choose non-typical pets in which case they had to make sure their arguments were super convincing. For instance, F. mentioned that a big, strong gorilla would be a perfect pet as it would fend off mean kids on the playground.
Finally, today was the day students were waiting for and is why we posted about chips in the agenda message last week! Each student received 3 chips; while enjoying these scrumptious treats, they had to think about what made it so delicious by focusing on the 5 senses.
Students jotted down some notes...
... and are now in the process of writing an opinion piece declaring why Pringles/Ruffles/Doritos are the best chip.
