This week we continued to build our writing stamina through Work on Writing. During Work on Writing our goal is to get started right away (show a sense of urgency) and write the entire time. We are not focused on correct spelling during this time, as writing fluency and stamina can be stalled when students do not know how to spell a word. Instead, we ask they underline words they do not know how to spell (we will have separate mini lessons on spelling).
After Work on Writing, students get an opportunity to share their writing with the class. Then, I read over the writing and determine what skill needs to be reviewed and practiced for the next Work on Writing.
This week we reviewed and practiced:
1) What makes a complete sentence - a complete sentence has a noun, a predicate (verb) and it must make sense
2) When to capitalize words - beginning of a sentence and proper nouns
As well, it may be beneficial for some students to review letter formations and printing techniques to ensure legibility.
Have a great weekend!
