Most of our students have completed their structures!
First, we tested the properties of materials (paper, cardstock, styrofoam, plastic, aluminum, fabric, plasticine, and wood). Students tested if these materials were waterproof, durable, flexible, etc. and made observations.
Next, students were presented with 5 different problems/challenges and chose one to solve. Prior to building, students had to plan and justify why they chose certain materials.
Here are the results of our 2 block construction periods:
Challenge #1 - Create a tower that can be used to display a trophy. The tower must be at least 30 cm off the ground.
Challenge #2 - Create a pouch that can hold keys and chapstick. The pouch must be able to fit in your pocket or small purse.
Challenge #3 - Design a banana carrier that will keep your banana from getting squished in your lunch box.
Challenge #4 - Create a tool that can clean a spill. The tool must have a handle and you have to use three or more materials.
Challenge #5 - Create a pencil holder for your desk. The holder must be able to open and close, and be made of three or more materials.
Lastly, students had to jot down any modifications that were made to their original design, create a unique name for their product, and reflect on any changes they would make if given the opportunity to build again.
The few students that needed more time to complete their product are encouraged to finish it at home.
Have a great weekend!
